HowardTed-52800-4656Legal Aid was delighted to hear the news that 2006 Servant of Justice Honoree Ted Howard named Wiley Rein’s first full-time pro bono partner.  We have worked with Ted for years.  Most notably, he was lead counsel in a class action with Legal Aid brought on behalf of indigent and working-poor tenants against one of the District’s largest managers of low-income rental properties.  The claim alleged that the company’s routine practice of suing tenants for untimely payment of their monthly rent and using the filing and subsequent dismissal of these lawsuits as the premise for charging the tenants with excessive “court costs” constitutes an unlawful business practice proscribed by the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act.  The case resulted in a settlement valued at more than half a million dollars, benefitting low-income DC renters.  Equally important, the settlement resulted in injunctive relief in which the property manager agreed to forever cease its allegedly unlawful practices.

We look forward to working with Ted and Wiley Rein in the coming months and years.  For more about Ted’s appointment as Wiley Rein’s Pro Bono Partner, read this press release.
