Just over two months ago, Legal Aid kicked off its 23rd Annual Generous Associates Campaign with the goal of raising $800,000 to support Legal Aid and the client community whom it serves.

When Legal Aid approached me to be this year’s Honorary Chair, I was humbled and said I would be extremely honored to accept, knowing that it would allow me to participate actively in our legal community’s commitment to making justice real for our neighbors living in poverty in the District of Columbia.

Though we set a goal of raising $800,000 in honor of Legal Aid’s 80th Anniversary, we knew this was an ambitious goal.  We would have to exceed last year’s record-breaking campaign.  And we would have to do so in the midst of the ongoing economic crisis.  But week after week, through the incredible hard work and dedication of associates who volunteered their time to be Co-Chairs and firm Coordinators, we witnessed the most spirited and engaging Campaign to date.

Every step along the way, I (and others at Legal Aid) were heartened as we saw unprecedented participation and support for the Campaign.

This year, we had a record 70 participating firms; we had the most attendants ever at our Generous Associates Campaign Reception; and Legal Aid representatives attended more firm events than ever to raise awareness and support for the Campaign.  Most importantly, as of today, not only have we surpassed our $800,000 goal, but we have done so with the support of more than 3,000 individual donors – the most ever – from our legal community.

Every time we expected the Campaign to slow down, it surged ahead.  Indeed, virtually from the beginning of the Campaign, we never lost our lead over the previous year.   As I have been saying to Co-Chairs and Coordinators all along, I am so proud to be a part of this inspiring effort, because in the end, it is not about the dollars raised, but it is about the lives that Legal Aid will help change for those who desperately need Legal Aid’s critical aid and services.

The Generous Associates Campaign is not over yet.  Any donation or pledge received prior to July 31st still counts towards the Campaign – and counts towards the ever-important firm competition!   I have been honored to be the Honorary Chair of this year’s record-breaking Generous Associates Campaign.   But the real thanks and credit go out to all of those involved in the Campaign, including the more than 3,000 individual donors.
