Last Friday, the Superior Court held a conference for domestic violence advocated:  “Domestic Violence in Families: Strengthening the Community Response.”  Legal Aid Senior Staff Attorney Trisha Monroe served on the planning committee.   The Conference featured exceptional speakers, panel presentations, and training workshops on a variety of important topics including, Domestic Violence and Court-Ordered Visitation: Minimizing Trauma to the Child and Collateral Consequences of Domestic Violence Convictions or Adjudications.  The highlight of the conference was a powerful presentation by Susan Still, a women’s rights activist and a survivor of a tremendously abusive relationship with her former husband.  Ms. Still spoke about enduring decades of verbal and physical abuse, the impact of the abuse on her children, and her experience with the legal system.

Legal Aid congratulates the D.C. Family Court and Domestic Violence Unit on a successful and informative conference.  Conference materials can be found at http://dccourts.gov/fcconference

Legal Aid has a very active program of representing domestic violence survivors.   Our Domestic Violence and Family Law Unit serves hundreds of women each year seeking protection from violence.  We work to secure orders of protection and on other legal issues necessary for safety and security.   The Unit staffed a table at the conference.
