October 24-29 is D.C. Pro Bono Week!  Sponsored by the Washington Council of Lawyers, Pro Bono Week provides an opportunity to celebrate pro bono contributions and expand our commitment as a community to pro bono service. Our local Pro Bono Week coincides with the American Bar Association’s annual National Pro Bono Celebration.

This year’s Pro Bono Week features a great lineup of trainings, clinics, court tours, social events, and more.  Click here for a full list of events and ways you can get involved. We hope many of you will take this opportunity to celebrate and learn more about the D.C. legal community’s unparalleled commitment to pro bono service.

On Tuesday, October 25, Legal Aid and Neighborhood Legal Services Program are hosting a guided tour of the D.C. Superior Court’s Landlord and Tenant Court. Legal Aid’s Beth Mellen Harrison, who has been practicing housing law in the District for over a decade, will lead the tour. This is a fantastic opportunity to get an inside perspective on what goes on in this fast-paced, high-volume court and to learn about how you can help low-income individuals and families assert their rights and remain in their homes.

Here at Legal Aid, we have a lot to celebrate! Our robust Pro Bono Program has been very busy this past year. We’ve offered a variety of training opportunities, developed new law firm partnerships, and launched several new pro bono projects, including the city-wide Housing Right to Counsel Pilot Project, which is working with many in the law firm community to provide representation to low-income D.C. residents threatened with eviction from their subsidized housing.

Last year, Legal Aid pro bono volunteers provided a record-breaking 33,500 hours of service – valued at over $17.5 million – to make justice real for low-income individuals and families in our community.  And we are on track to place more cases with pro bono counsel than ever before in 2016!

During Pro Bono Week and every week of the year, we celebrate all of our dedicated pro bono volunteers throughout the city who contribute significant time and talent to helping our client community secure access to justice!
