Legal Aid is pleased to honor Randy Brater as the 2010 recipient of the Klepper Prize for Volunteer Excellence.  The Klepper Prize was created through the generosity of Martin and Arlene Klepper in order to recognize an attorney early in her or his career who has made a significant volunteer contribution to the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia.  Randy will accept the award at Legal Aid’s Servant of Justice Awards Dinner, scheduled for Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at the JW Marriott Hotel.

Randy Brater

Randy , now a partner at Arent Fox LLP, has been a volunteer and supporter of Legal Aid since 2002, shortly after he moved to Washington, DC  to join his firm.   As a new associate, Randy wanted to find a way to “give back.”  He soon learned that Arent Fox participates in Legal Aid’s Volunteer Intake Program and he was attracted to the opportunity to come to Legal Aid’s office , meet with potential clients and try to help them with their legal problems, often involving critical decisions about their home, children, health care or public benefits.   Over the past eight years, Randy has taken on a leadership role in the program.  In addition to volunteering himself, Randy recruits and organizes his firm colleagues to participate.   Moreover, he has provided critical assistance and feedback to improve the training materials provided to the volunteers.

To supplement his client work, Randy became Arent Fox’s firm coordinator for Legal Aid’s annual Generous Associates fundraising campaign and the following year became a Campaign Co-Chair, helping to organize the campaign throughout the city.  In 2009, after being elected partner at his firm, Randy was no longer eligible to serve officially as a Campaign Co-Chair, but he remained involved and rallied his partners to support the effort.  Randy’s leadership has contributed to record-breaking fundraising for this campaign both at his firm and citywide year after year.

In Randy’s words, “I wanted to get involved with one organization on many levels and the combination of client intake and fundraising for Legal Aid has been a great fit for me.  I litigate for a living, so I like the chance to contribute in a different way.”
