Oh the weather outside is frightful, but prescription drug plans are so delightful…

The holiday season is fast approaching, and at Legal Aid that means it’s time for Medicare Part D open enrollment. For the eleventh year in a row, Legal Aid and Whitman-Walker Health are hosting walk-in clinics for Medicare Part D recipients to enroll in 2018 prescription drug plans.

These clinics meet a very important need for our clients. Medicare Part D plans can vary drastically from year to year. A plan that works perfectly for someone one year may stop covering some of their drugs the next, or charge thousands of dollars in premiums and co-pays. The first time Part D recipients find out about these changes could be in the New Year, when they go to the pharmacy and find that their potentially life-saving medication is no longer covered. For low-income Medicare beneficiaries, this price shock could be devastating.

Legal Aid helps to prevent this problem by offering our clients and other community members a Medicare check-up at one of our clinics. At each clinic, Legal Aid staff members and law firm volunteers meet with clients in person or over the phone. Using the Medicare website, they run a customized analysis using the client’s drug list and dosages to determine which plan will best meet the client’s needs.

In-person clinics are held at our offices in NW and SE on a walk-in basis. There will also be one walk-in clinic at each of the Bread for the City locations in NW and SE. For more information on clinic dates and locations, please see this flyer or contact Legal Aid at (202) 628-1161.
