New Report Paints Bleak Picture for D.C. Affordable Housing

This week, the Urban Institute issued the latest chapter in its report, “Our Changing City,” illustrating how Washington, D.C. has changed over the past decade. The report describes how the influx of new residents, particularly “millennials,” is altering the city’s demographic picture, its services, and its institutions.

The housing picture is unsurprising. Over the last decade, the city has added thousands of high-cost rental units, while the number of units affordable to our clients has steadily declined. Assisted housing is at risk in neighborhoods where luxury units are finding high demand. Overall, the report concludes, “DC is increasingly unaffordable for lower-income residents.”
