Two weeks ago, several Legal Aid attorneys left the courtroom for the TV studio. Dean Shelley Broderick of the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clark School of Law hosts a public television show on UDC-TV called “Sound Advice” that focuses on legal issues affecting the DC community.  Dean Broderick welcomed Legal Aid’s four legal fellows to talk about their legal practices.

The episodes debuted on UDC-TV yesterday, and will continue to replay in the District of Columbia on Comcast Channel 98, RCM Channel 19, and Verizon Channels 19 and 21.  A full programming schedule for UDC-TV can be found here. The Legal Aid Sound Advice episodes are also available on YouTube.

The first show, entitled Legal Aid for Veterans and Defendants in Debt Collection, features Skadden fellow Ashley Waddell Tingstad, who shared important information about abusive debt collection practices, and Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow Nina Wu, who discussed benefits available for disabled veterans.

The second show, Critical Safety-net Benefits - Unemployment Compensation and Access to Healthcare, features Equal Justice Works Fellow Stephanie Akpa, who talked about the key healthcare programs for low-income people living in DC, and Equal Justice Works Fellow Drake Hagner, who discussed DC’s unemployment benefits program that is especially crucial for low-wage workers.

In related news, earlier this spring, Legal Aid Executive Director Eric Angel was invited into DCTV’s studio to shoot a public service announcement. That announcement can now be seen in the District of Columbia on Comcast Channels 95 and 96, RCM Channels 10 and 11, and Verizon Channels 10, 11, and 28.  It is also available at on YouTube.

We are grateful for these opportunities to partner with UDC Cable TV’s Sound Advice and with DCTV to help spread the word about Legal Aid’s programs and services.
