It is my great privilege to announce that the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia has again been named one of the “Best NonProfits to Work For 2015” by The NonProfit Times. In fact, we were ranked sixth highest nationwide, and are number one on the list in Washington, D.C.

Regular readers of our blog know that Legal Aid’s mission is to “Make Justice Real” – in individual and systematic ways – for individuals and families in the District who could not otherwise afford to hire a lawyer. Legal Aid staff and volunteers offer individual clients a continuum of services from brief advice to full representation, and also seek out precedent-setting cases that can benefit large numbers of people living in poverty. We work to prevent evictions and preserve affordable housing; end abusive debt collection practices; secure access to critical health care, nutrition, and public benefits; and protect individuals from domestic violence and promote family stability through child support and custody arrangements.

The Nonprofit Times says one of the key indicators of employee satisfaction in nonprofits is how mission-driven the organization is; employees want to feel their work is closely tied to that mission and they are making progress towards tangible goals that align with the mission. I have known since I began working at Legal Aid ten years ago that this is an incredible organization made up of passionate individuals committed to Legal Aid’s mission and driven to make a difference for our clients and our community, so it’s no surprise to me that we did so well in the rankings this year.
