We were saddened to learn of the recent death of Stanley L. Temko.  A partner at the law firm of Covington & Burling LLP for more than 40 years, Stan and his wife, Francine Salzman Temko, who passed away in December 1998, were devoted supporters of Legal Aid.

Visitors to Legal Aid are well aware of the Temko name.  Our library and conference room is the “Francine S. Temko Library,” named after Stan’s wife, an extraordinary Legal Aid volunteer attorney, who provided representation and non-litigation assistance to hundreds of Legal Aid clients.  Fran was the recipient of Legal Aid’s highest honor, the Servant of Justice Award, for “unswerving dedication and achievement in providing access for all persons, regardless of income, to representation before the District of Columbia court.”

After Fran’s untimely death, Stan stayed committed to Legal Aid, attending our events and visiting our offices.  He believed passionately in Legal Aid’s mission of providing high-level representation to the most vulnerable members of our society.  Through Fran’s extraordinary volunteer work and the family’s extraordinary generosity, the Temkos helped advance the cause of justice for hundreds, if not thousands, of persons living in poverty in the District of Columbia.  We are immensely grateful to have counted them as part of the Legal Aid community.

We extend our deep sympathies to the Temko family.  An obituary for Stan can be found here and an extended article about his life and accomplishments here.
