In 2004, the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia gave its highest honor, its Servant of Justice Award, jointly to Sargent Shriver, Lois G. Williams, Ed. Clinton Bamberger, Jr., Edgar S. Cahn, and Jean Camper Cahn (posthumously) for their role in founding the Office of Economic Opportunities Legal Services Program, a predecessor of the Legal Services Corporation, now the largest funder of civil legal services in the country.  It was wonderful to be able to honor Sargent Shriver and this extraordinary group of individuals for their achievements in the war on poverty.  For more on Sargent Shriver’s memorable life, see the New York Times obituary.
