Last month, Kirkland & Ellis featured its historic partnership with Legal Aid in a video the firm produced in recognition of National Pro Bono Week. The collaboration dates back to April 2013, when Legal Aid first opened the doors to a then-new intake site in Southwest DC, located at Friendship Baptist Church.

Legal Aid’s expansion into Southwest was made possible as a result of an extraordinary, multi-year donation that Legal Aid received from Kirkland, which allowed Legal Aid to reach low-income residents who may otherwise have had difficulty accessing legal services. In addition to providing financial support to Legal Aid, Kirkland attorneys and legal assistants staffed the site twice a week under Legal Aid’s management, providing advice and representation to clients needing legal assistance. Since the project first started, Kirkland volunteers have conducted hundreds of intakes and handled dozens of Legal Aid pro bono matters.

The firm’s partnership with Legal Aid continues to grow and evolve. Earlier this year, Legal Aid and Kirkland decided to move the project from Southwest to Southeast DC, to address the ever-growing needs we have observed East of the Anacostia River, where one in three residents live in poverty. This change in focus also coincided with Legal Aid’s plans to move into and renovate a larger, above-ground office at the Anacostia Professional Services Building, affectionately known to many as “the Big Chair.”

We are proud to announce that earlier this month, Kirkland attorneys and legal assistants began staffing this even higher volume intake location. Also beginning this month, Legal Aid’s hours of operation in Southeast changed: We are now open for general intake at the Big Chair on Mondays and Thursdays between 10:00am and 1:30pm. Applicants for our services may now come to our offices on these intake days either in the morning (at SE) or the afternoon (in NW).

Legal Aid strives to meet our clients where they are and have our services evolve as our clients’ needs evolve. We are fortunate to have partners like Kirkland & Ellis, whose pro bono support and financial assistance allow us to do so.
