Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day

December 21^st is the beginning of winter.   It is also the shortest day and the longest night of the year.   For the last 19 years, the winter solstice has been Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day and a particularly apt day to remember homeless members of our community who have died.  For more information on the day, please visit the National Health Care For The Homeless Council’s website.  

  The Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, the National Coalition for the Homeless, the National Health Care for the Homeless Council and other groups have organized a candlelight vigil to commemorate the day.  

 This is an important year to show concern for people who are homeless.   The recession has driven more people into poverty and placed many more at risk of losing housing.   At the same time, the District and other local governments have budget shortfalls that have resulted in deep cuts to services.
